Thought art | by Bettina Kohlen in a3Kultur | 21.3.2024

The gentle and precise art of the Augsburg-based Daniel Man is currently a guest at the project space augsburg contemporary. Two large paintings, two smaller paper collages, related to each other and the room by precisely balanced colored traces on the wall and ceiling: Daniel Man, who works in Augsburg, stages »between thoughts« in a clear and concentrated manner in the small, sophisticated gallery. Man's art draws on various traditions and experiences. The artist, who was born in London and studied at the academies in Braunschweig and Munich, brings his experience as a graffiti artist as well as the culture of his Chinese roots. Man's artistic approach, which includes classic painting and paper cutting as well as the use of spray cans, is condensed in his works. In Man's softly colored art, clearly defined fields of color rub up against diffuse clouds of color. The contrast between bright/blurred creates overlays. At the same time, however, an abstract spatial depth is created. Without any prior sketches or planning, you draw, paint and spray delicate colors on the canvas, letting yourself be guided by the moment and your thoughts, adding detail to detail, pausing - at some point you reach the point where you can finish the work. In this way, the process of creation itself becomes part of the art.
